Objectives
· To make you aware about the concept of management, management theories and application of management in libraries and information centres;
· To make you familiar with management techniques applied to libraries and information centres and knowledge centres; and
· To make you acquainted with the newer areas and techniques of library and information centres management.
Course Coverage
The course covers and briefly entails what management is, what management does, what the management of libraries and information centres is all about. It imparts knowledge of the various management theories. It also focuses on the management of library and information centres, their activities and organisational tasks including collections, facilities management, digitisation, and measurement and evaluation of activities and services. Managing information resources, time, people and finances are explored in various units/ modules. The concepts of management as applied to libraries and information centres, with reference to the librarian and information officer as manager; his roles, powers, and responsibilities and relationships with the authorities, management structure, performance evaluation, motivation is described. Processes of goal setting, developing action plans; budgeting; statistics and reporting are dealt with in this course. Aspects related to techniques and approaches to management of change, quality, marketing, communication, managing oneself, team management, and management of technologies are also dealt with.
Pre-requisite
The learner should have the foundational knowledge or working experience of libraries and information centres.
Target Learners
The course is designed for the students of library and information science as well as for working library and information professionals. However, anyone who wishes to learn about ‘Management of libraries, information and knowledge centres’ is welcomed to join the course.

· Meaning and scope of management in daily operations of libraries and information centres and also about the long term managerial implications;
· The evolution of management theories and its application to current practice in library and information centres;
· About the Strategic planning, problem-solving and decision-making skills as applied to actual library and/or information services management;

· Identifying the major issues affecting the librarianship, and the management of library and information services.
